Rockwell was represented at a 7-a-side rugby competition at Clonmel Rugby Club on Tuesday 21st April. It was an under-15 competition which brought together several of the schools in Tipperary. The Rockwell team which included several of this year’s JCT emerged victorious.

GIRLS RUGBY BLITZ
On April 1st the first ever girl’s schools full-contact blitz was held in Rockwell.
The teams were split into two pools and each team played three matches. Both Rockwell teams topped their pools which meant that they faced each other in the final, which turned out to be a great match! The score after full-time was level with tries from Rosie Lynch and Amy Dwyer on one team and tries from Mollie O’Donnell and Aisling Keneally on the other.
A plaque was presented to both winning teams. Congratulations to all the girls involved and thanks to our coach Ms.Patrique Kelly.
Congratulations to Shane Buckley who was capped for Irish Schools (U.18) against Wales and Italy over the Easter break.
Congratulations to Patrick Butler who played against France during the Easter break.
Congratulations to the captain, Aidan Butler, and to the members of the Under 14 team which won the Limerick Shield by defeating Castletroy in a hard-fought final on Wednesday 1st April. Congratulations to the Senior Cup team on reaching the final of this year’s competition. While disappointed to fall at the last hurdle, the team has every reason to be proud of its achievement on going so far in the competition. A big ‘thank you’ to coaches Mark Butler, Tom Mulcahy and Fergus Timmons; to Patrick Butler on his inspirational leadership; and to the whole Senior Panel. Thank you for the enjoyment and pride you gate to the school, to the past students and to your families.
Congratulations to the U.14 team which has qualified for the final of the Limerick Cup against Castletroy on Wednesday 1st April.

Quarter Final Feb. 11th
Rockwell 22 Glenstal 17
Congratulations to the SCT which qualified for the semi-final of this year’s Cup with a 22-17 victory over Glenstal. Their match at Clanwilliam was a very exciting one with the outcome uncertain right up to the final whistle. That Rockwell deserved their win cannot be doubted but they had to work hard for it. Their performance was a vast improvement on that of their Preliminary Round match against last year’s winners, Castletroy. In their match with Glenstal they were given an early wake-up call as the Murroe school scored a fine try within minutes of the game starting. Also within the first fifteen minutes they had a big scare as only a fine tackle by full back Paul McEvoy saved them from conceding another try. However, Rockwell settled into the game more and more as time passed, and the team scored three excellent tries, two in the first half – one by Gavin Ryan, and one by Ken Dwyer – and one in the second half by Brian Smith. Paul McEvoy converted two of them from close to the touchline as well as kicking a long-distance penalty. The semi-final will take place on Thursday 5th March when Rockwell’s opponents will be St. Munchin’s who defeated Ard Scoil Rís in the quarter final. Venue: Clanwilliam; Kick-off 3 O'clock.

GAMES REPORT
FRIDAY 30TH JANUARY - WEDNESDAY 4TH FEBRUARY
On Sunday 1st February, the Rockwell Junior Seconds played Christian Brothers’ Junior Seconds in the Final of the Kidney Cup at White’s Field, Cork. Conditions were very poor, not conducive to open rugby. Rockwell was first to score, Aidan Barron scoring a try which Philip Quinlan converted. Unfortunately a rather easily conceded try before half-time meant that Christians turned over at half-time only two points in arrears and with the promise of the wind at their backs. The Rockwell team defended heroically against their much bigger opponents, but eventually Christians got over for another try. They deserved their 10-7 victory.
On Wednesday 4th February, Rockwell again travelled to Cork, this time to the C.I.T. grounds in Bishopstown. The occasion was the quarter-final of the Junior Cup, PBC providing the opposition on this occasion. Rockwell faced the elements in the first half and they defended their line bravely for the first 30 minutes, especially near the end of the half. It was to their credit that they kept the margin down to three points at the turn over, PBC’s two penalty goals being balanced by a Coleman Kennedy penalty. Rockwell made good use of the wind in the second half. Long kicks created a certain amount of panic in the Pres backline, but in their full-back they had a player of great skill who frequently cleared his line and set about launching dangerous attacks. Twice Rockwell drove for the PBC line, twice they were repelled. When a penalty was awarded to the Cork school, the siege was lifted, and in a strong move up the field, the Pres fullback was on hand to score the game’s only try. The conversion was missed but it didn‘t matter, for when the final whistle blew five minutes later, PBC had progressed into the semi-final stage of the competition; Rockwell had to return home trophy-less.

SATURDAY 17TH JANUARY - WEDNESDAY 28TH JANUARY
The final of the Kidney Cup for Junior Seconds (Rockwell vs. CBC) was postponed on Sunday 25th January as the pitch at Clonmel was deemed unplayable by the referee. The match has been refixed for White’s Cross, Cork on Sunday 1st February at 12 p.m..
The JCT suffered a narrow defeat in their Cup match with Glenstal on Wednesday 21st January. The format of the Cup this year means that Rockwell will now have to play the winners of the PBC vs. St. Munchin’s match which has had to be postponed three times due to bad weather but which will now be played on Thursday 29th January. The quarter final will take place in either Cork or Limerick.
The SCT played Castletroy in the first phase of the quarter finals of the Cup on Wednesday 28th January at Clonmel. Rockwell led by two penalties to nil at half-time, both penalties having been kicked by Paul McEvoy. Two tries early in the second half, one of which was converted, gave Castle troy a 12-6 lead, but Rockwell came back strongly and the captain, Paddy Butler, was there to finish off a great drive by the Rockwell forwards. The conversion was missed, and Castletroy came down the field to kick another penalty for a 15-11 victory. Rockwell will now play Glenstal in Clanwilliam on the 11th February - the winners progressing to the semi-final.

RUGBY REPORT: SEPTEMBER - DECEMBER 2008
Rockwell has been fielding teams at SCT, Under 16, JCT, Under 14 and Under 13 levels this term. There have been Munster League competitions for the Under 16 and Under 14 teams, while the other teams have had a number of challenge matches over the past three months. In addition to Rockwell’s matches, a number of the senior players have represented Munster at Interprovincial level as well.
Inter Provincials:
The Interprovincials took place during the month of October this year. They took place at both Under 18 and Under 19 levels. Munster’s matches were played against the other three Provinces on the 1st, 8th and 16th of the month. At Under 19 level, four of the SCT were capped: Gavin Ryan, Brian Smith, Brendan Cullinane and Paddy Butler. Paddy Butler had the honour of being nominated captain of the team. At Under 18 level, Shane Buckley represented the Province.
SCT
The Interprovincial series disrupts the Rockwell SCT in the earlier part of each year. It is only from November onwards that a full team can be assembled. This year has been no different. Bad weather also disrupted a number of fixtures early on in the season, but the absence of matches with other schools provided the coaches with time to help develop the players’ skills. This year there is a new team of coaches: Mark Butler, Tom Mulcahy and Fergus Timmons. The team has played seven matches, winning two, drawing one and losing four. Glenstal (22-0), Newtown (27-7), CBC (0-23), Methody (7-25), Gonzaga (3-12), St.Mary’s (10-10) and Ard Scoil Rís (5-9) have been played during the term. There remain a number of important fixtures between now and the end of the first term. St. Munchin’s play in Rockwell on Wednesday, 3rd December. The team travels to Blackrock on Wednesday, 10th December. Kilkenny College round off the term at Rockwell on the 17th December.
3/12 SCT vs St. Munchin's: 10 - 10 Brendan Cullinane scored the try. Paul McEvoy converted it and scored a penalty.
10/12: SCT vs Blackrock: 16 - 53 Brendan Culinane scored the try. Paul McEvoy: conversion and 3 penalties
17/12: SCT vs Kilkenny: 17 - 7 Tries by Brendan Cullinane, Ken O'Dwyer, Patrick Butler. Paul McEvoy (1 conv.)
20/12: SCT vs Crescent: 12 - 5 Brian Smith (try), Paul McEvoy (try and conv.)
Representative Honours: on the 21/12 in Italy: Irish Schools U.18 vs Italy: 15 - 12 for Ireland. Shane Buckley capped in the 2nd row for Ireland
The Munster Senior Cup has taken on a new format this year. In the preliminary round, Rockwell play last year’s winners, Castletroy - a repeat of the 2008 quarter final. Depending on whether Rockwell wins that match or loses it, they will be playing any one of four teams in the quarter final. If they win that match, they will progress to the semi-final, but the losing team will go out of the competition.
Under 16
The Under 16 team participates in the Bowen Shield competition. This year the team qualified for a home-based semi-final against CBC whom they had defeated earlier in the competition. Unfortunately when the two teams met again on Wednesday, 26th
November, the Cork side emerged victorious (3-18).
It was a disappointing end to what had been a very successful season up to then. The team’s coach, Frank Fitzgerald, felt that the team had it in them to go the whole way in the competition, but on the day there was no doubt but that Christians were the
stronger of the two teams. A friendly game against Kilkenny College (39-0) provided the perfect warm-up fixture for Shield games against St. Munchin’s (3-10), Ard Scoil Rís (17-12), CBC (9-8), Bandon (22-0), Crescent (26-10) and the team that had beaten them at Under 15 level last year, Glenstal (33-0).
JCT
The JCT has two new coaches this year. Brendan Ferris has taken over as head coach, assisted by Kiwi Johann Bardoul. Under their direction, the team has improved considerably and has given some fine performances to date. They have played seven matches, winning three, drawing two, while losing two. Defeated by Kilkenny College (0-5) in their first game, the team bounced back with a victory over Glenstal (32-19). Since then they have had games against Castle troy (7-3), PBC (12-11), Gonzaga (12-24), St. Mary’s (5-5) and Ard Scoil Rís (26-10). Games against St. Munchin’s, Blackrock and Crescent will complete their first term fixtures.
3/12 JCT vs St. Munchin's: 10 - 0 Tries by Eddie Phelan and Liam Murchan
10/12 JCT vs Blackrock: 0 - 75
17/12 JCT B vs Waterpark: 12-17 Tries by Alex Lynch and Philip Quirke. One conversion by Philip Quirke
20/12 JCT vs Crescent: 12 - 19 Tries by Rian Boland and Ronan Maher. One conversion by Colman Kennedy
In the preliminary round of the Munster Junior Cup, Rockwell has been drawn against the winning ‘B’ school. This game takes place on Wednesday 21st January 2009.
Under 14
The Munster Under 14 League, the Kidney Shield, takes place alongside the Under 16 Bowen Shield competition. This year the team reached the quarter-final of the competition. Coached by South African staff member, Charlie Hanson, and Kiwi Gap student, Leo Brown, the team should have gone on at least one stage further in the opinion of the team and their mentors. A heavy defeat against Kilkenny (6-47) was not the ideal preparation for their league. Defeats against St. Munchin’s (7-17) and Ard Scoil Rís (5-20) were followed by fine wins over CBC (23-20), Bandon (21-0) and Glenstal (31-0). However, Crescent’s emphatic victory (10-31) meant that Rockwell had to return to St. Munchin’s for a quarter-final match. While Rockwell lead by 12-5 at half-time, the visitors could not hold out and the Limerick side won the match, 15-12.
10/12 U.14 vs Midleton: 10 - 10 Tries by Timo Boelkhe and James Holohan
Under 13
Once again this year Rockwell has been in a position to field two Under 13 teams. The number of boys who had played rugby before coming to the College was less than normal this year. However, the teams have made good progress under the guidance of coaches, Mr. Niall McGonagle and Fr. Brendan Hally. The A team in particular has some very nice players and has scored some very impressive tries during the season to date. The blitz tournament with Roscrea got the season off to a good start again this year, providing as it did an opportunity for every boy on the panel to play a quasi-competitive game of rugby. A home fixture with Newbridge introduced A and B players to the 15-man game. The A team was narrowly defeated (12-17) but the B team was much too weak for the opposition, going under 12-47. Si
nce then, the A team has drawn once and won all of its other matches: CBC (19-19), Templeogue (55-5), Ard Scoil Rís (20-15), Kilkenny (59-0), St.Munchin’s (34-17) and Castle troy (32-12). The B team had wins against Templeogue (57-0), Ard Scoil Rís (19-5) and St. Munchin’s (24-12), a draw with Kilkenny (24-24) and defeats against CBC (22-27) and Castle troy (0-78).
10/12 U.13 vs Midleton: 27 - 5: Tries by Lukas Kaminski (2), David O'Dwyer, Eireamhoin McCarthy and Liam Casey. One conversion by Liam Casey
