Rugby 2009-'10

Rockwell won the Munster U.16 10-a-side competition held at Annacotty on Wednesday 21st April.  The team suffered a defeat at the hands of Glenstal (7-23), but victories over Crescent (31-0) and Ard Scoil Rís (21-19) secured the win on the basis of a superior try-count.  Rockwell try scorers were: Liam Murchan (4), Sonny Dwyer (2) as well as Adam Horgan, Aidan Butler and Darragh Foley.

Five of this year’s SCT have been selected for squad training for next year’s Munster U.19 team.  They are:  Stephen A. Maguire, Tim Rafferty, Donough McGillycuddy, Shaun Horgan and Ross Mullane.

Shane Buckley and J.J.Hanrahan represented Ireland Schools Under 18s in an international tournament which took place in Wales over the Easter holidays.  They played in the three internationals: against Wales and England, in both of which Ireland was defeated; and against Scotland which Ireland won.

ROCKWELL U-I4 V CRESCENT 2ND DECEMBER 2009
A MATCH
This was a good day for the A Team after a few matches were thrown away too easily in recent times. The lads had to be aggressive from the start and they did just that as they controlled the first 15 mins. Despite territorial advantage the lads conceded the first try with the Crescent out half slotting through a glorious kick,as a committed Full Back, Tommy Anglim, was caught in a ruck, and as a result of a few phases of play Crescent opened the scoring against the run of play. Within 10 mins Rockwell responded with a charge down try with William Purcell rewarded for his sustained effort. Half time score 5-5.
The second half performance was a much better one from Rockwell as in previous games they let games slip having taken early leads. The lads rucked well and quick ball resulted in more scoring chances. These opportunities turned into tries with our strong flanker from Creggs, Co Roscommon, Ian O’Reilly dashing over the line for an invaluable 17-5 lead with a conversion from Out-half, Colm O’Shaughnessy.
Rockwell held on for a well deserved win and their attitude was much improved too. Full back Tommy Anglim and captain Jack Bolger were outstanding too as were debutant props Darren Fehilly and Senan Murray. Next week sees both teams going to Limerick to face St Munchins, their last fixture before the Christmas festivities.

Rockwell u-14s entertained Glenstal on a day when it was great just to have a game after the atrocious weather conditions of late.
The A game started with Glenstal playing against the wind yet they were in control of the game from the start and deserved their lead 12-0at half time. Rockwell looked a little rusty and shell shocked with the Glenstal forwards on top, particularly in the scrum.
The second half proved to be a better half for Rockwell, scoring two unconverted tries. As the Glenstal team seemed to tire Rockwell piled on the pressure yet a single lapse in defence resulted in a try for the visitors, which ended up being the crucial score. The match finished 17-10. The Rockwell scorers were Jack Bolger and Ian O’Reilly

The B team had a useful victory winning 27-10. The try scorers were Michael Flanagan, Glenn Kerrigan, Eoin O’Dwyer, Dylan English & the Mexican “Speedy Gonzalez” Eduardo Guttierrez!!!! Congrats on a good victory and a well disciplined performance – a lesson the A team should learn before their next game!

October 14th 2009 Rockwell First Year v Castletroy

 A-Team 12-20
 B-team 32-24

In the A match Rockwell dominated the first half with tries from Ian
O'Reilly and Rodrigo Almagro, with a conversion from Colm
O'Shaughnessy. A few changes from Castletroy in the second half proved
to be a turning point as they scored 17 points to no reply. The A
squad had been somewhat weakened with four players missing from their
 winning encounter against Newbridge.

The B fixture was a real ding dong affair with tries tit-for-tat from
both sides, with Rockwell narrowly behind in the first half. The
changes in the A team from Castletroy affected the concentration of
their B team and Rockwell capitalised by knocking them over in the
 second half.

October 21st 2009 Rockwell First Year v Ard Scoil Ris
 A-Team 15-5
 B-Team 22-34
This was a tough, tense affair with a great battle up front in the
forwards. At half time it was 5-5, with a try from Jack Bolger. The
first ten minutes of the second half was when Rockwell gained the
upper hand, and tries from Michael Flanagan and Ian O'Reilly sealed
 the victory.

The B team had another great blow for blow match, losing to a stronger
opposition. Eduardo Gutteriez again getting a few tries for Rockwell.
