Rockwell win the S.E. Region U19 Basketball Final
Last week our Under 19 Basketball team travelled to Waterford to play Bagenalstown in the South East Semi Final . The first half was an extremely tough contest and at half time the sides were level, 21 points each. Bagenalstown played extremely well and were on top for most of the second half. However, great efforts by our tall inside player, Philip Quirke, and vital scores from Eoghan Sheehy and Alesshandro Lobato saw us pull the game back and draw level with five minutes to go. In the remaining minutes the lads took over and excellent scores by Eoghan Sheehy and Michael Healy ensured the victory for us. The final score was 38 -31.
After a two hour rest, the lads were back on the court to play in the South Eastern final against De la Salle of Arklow. We had an excellent start and led by eight points for most of the first half. However, in the final minute De la Salle scored three massive baskets and so at half time the teams were level on a scoreline of sixteen points each. Eoghan Sheehy and Jacob de Cos opened up the third quarter in fine style by scoring two great baskets. Bagenalstown again came back at us, and with a minute to go the teams were once again dead locked. An excellent three pointer by Eoghan Sheehy gave us the momentum in the final minute. Thankfully, we held on in what can only be described as a dramatic finish for a one point victory. This team has not been defeated this year and has worked very hard to win this prestigious title. Special thanks to Mr. Simon Kenny and Sinead Phillips for their coaching throughout the year.
