Golf 2010-11

The third and final stage of the annual Ryder-Cup-style competition with Colaiste Dhun Iascaigh took place at Cahir Golf Club on Monday 9th May.  The singles phase of the competition commenced with the Cahir school holding a comfortable 5-3 lead after the foursomes and the fourballs which took place before Easter.  Cahir retained their grip on the trophy with a comfortable five and half to two and a half win.  Rockwell’s winners were Niall McKenna and Evan Hughes, and John Corbett secured the half.  Other members of the Rockwell team were Liam Casey, Shaun O’Donoghue, Ciaran Burke, Fergal Dunne and Cian Flavin.

The first phase of the Ryder-Cup-style competition with Cahir – the foursomes stage – took place at Cahir G.C. on Monday 4th April.  The matches were shared, two wins each.  Niall McKenna and Liam Casey won by 3&1 as did Fergal Dunne and Evan HughesWillie O’Dwyer and Sean O’Donoghue were defeated by one hole. Cathal Ryan and John Corbett were defeated 3&1.

The second phase, the fourballs, took place on Monday 11th April.  Rockwell’s Fergal Dunne and Cian Flavin won their match by 6 & 4, but Niall McKenna & Willie O’Dwyer, Evan Hughes & John Corbett, and Kieran Burke & Fergal Dunne lost their matches, two of them by a single hole.

Rockwell was represented at the first round of the Irish Schools’ Championships which took place at Waterford Golf Club on Thursday 30th September.  The team of Ciaran Burke, Philip Quirke, Cian Flavin and Shaun O’Donoghue failed to qualify for the next round.

Rockwell was represented in the Tipperary section of the Munster Schools’ Strokeplay held at Tipperary Golf Club on Monday 11th October.  The competition is confined to Under 15 year olds.  Rockwell was represented by John Corbett, Jack Kennedy and Evan Hughes.  The team failed to advance to the Munster finals.
