Hurling/Gaelic 2011-2012

The First Year Girls participated in a gaelic football blitz in Mallow on Wednesday 2nd May.  40 teams in all participated in the tournament which saw schools divided into three groups based on enrolment numbers and football experience.  As Rockwell had the smallest number of girls enroled of any school, the College was placed in Division C.  But numbers didn’t count when it came to playing: Rockwell won their section of the blitz!  Thanks to the excellent coaching received in recent weeks from Michael Doyle and Tony Smith, the team “punched well above its weight” as the saying goes.  On their way to winning the tournament the First Years had wins over Clonmel Technical Institute, St. Anne’s Tipperary, Colaiste Choilm Ballincollig and SMI Newcastlewest.  Top Scorers were Roisin Finnane and Elise O’ConnorLaura Morrissey, the team’s captain, led by example.  Well done all!

Rockwell U.15 boys travelled to Newbridge College on the 9th May to defend the trophy that the school had won last year.  The Newbridge Shield is competed for between four schools: Rockwell, Glenstal, Roscrea and Newbridge.  Rockwell qualified for the final but were beaten by the host team.

Congratulations to the Girls’ Football team on winning the Munster Colleges’ U.18 Football Championship last Tuesday.  In the final, played in Clonmel, the team defeated Scoil Mhuire, Carrick by one point, 4/6 to 2/11.  Congratulations to coaches Michael Doyle and Tony Smith.

Sinead Kennedy was awarded ‘Player of the Match’

Munster Under 18 School Senior Football:
McCarthy Guides Rockwell to Victory
Rockwell College ...........................................2-16
Coliaster an Chroi Naofa................................2-7

Rockwell College competed in the Ladies’ Schools Football Championship for the first time in a number of years on Thursday last, recording a fine 2-16 to 2-7 first round victory over Colaiste an Chroi Naofa at Kilbehenny .

Rockwell played with the breeze in the first half and recorded some fine scores, with midfielder Aisling McCarthy scoring a fine goal after just one minute, settling any Rockwell nerves. The Cahir girl also went on to add points in the 11th , 12th and 15th minutes, and this, coupled with some early scores from Rachel Doyle and Sinead Kennedy, meant that Rockwell completely dominated the early exchanges. Rockwell captain Amy Sweeney, a sister of Tipperary senior footballer, Conor, scored a fine point from her centre back berth after 24 minutes and the excellent Sinead Kennedy added two more before the break to send Rockwell in at half-time 1-11 to 0-5 ahead.

However, any ideas Rockwell had of completely dominating the game were dashed after just two minutes of the second half when the Cork girls got in a for a goal, and they got another from a penalty by Caitriona Ni Fhuathaigh just two minutes later to put just six points between the teams. This was reduced to five after nine minutes of the second half after a fine score by Kelly Chealbhach, but this was to be the Cork girls last score. Aisling MCarthy hit back with two more points for Rockwell in the 11th and 18th minutes and when Kate Harney got in for a goal on 24 minutes the game was over as a contest. Two later Aisling McCarthy points saw her finishing with a personal tally of 1-7.

The fact that Rockwell achieved the win without Limerick minor footballer Sarah O’Sullivan, who was out with a wrist injury, spoke volumes for the performance.
The Rockwell team is coached by Rockwell teachers , current Moyle Rovers senior football manager Tony Smith and current Deputy Principal Michael Doyle.

Rockwell: J O’Gorman (cahir), S Sweeney (Ballyporeen), B Barlow (Clonmel), S Hennessy (Two Mile Borris), C Doyle (New Inn), A Sweeney (Ballyporeen 0-1), F Manton (Fethard), A McCarthy (Cahir 1-7), J Hannigan ( Lisronagh), C Lyons (Clonmel 0-2), S Kennedy (Cashel 0-5), Sorcha Sweeney (Ballyporeen), H Philips (Clonmel), R Doyle (Golden 0-1), K Harney (Clonmel 1-0), Subs K Binchy (Clonmel)
