The Under 19 Girls tennis team successfully retained their Munster Senior Tennis Shield when they defeated Scoil Mhuire Cork on Wednesday 13th May.  The team of Jill Pierse, Lean McMorrow, Louise Quinlan and Aine O’Dwyer won their three matches, Jill and Lean winning their singles matches, Louise and Aine their doubles match.

The boys’ Under 16B team had a marathon semi-final against John the Baptist, Hospital on Thursday 30th April, finally going down by 3 matches to 2.  The Rockwell team was:  Jack Marshall and Aidan Butler (singles) and Cesar Naeve and Charles Pierse (doubles).  Wins by Jack in his singles match, and Cesar and Charles in their doubles match ensured that Rockwell entered the reverse doubles leading by two matches to one.  However, both reverse doubles were lost.

The boys’ Under 14 team was beaten in the semi-final by St. Flannan’s whom they played in Ennis on Tuesday 28th April.  The team was:  Denis O’Connell and Niall Murphy (singles) and Cian Farrell and Liam Casey (doubles).  Niall won his singles match, and the reverse doubles with Liam, but the Clare side advanced to the final with a 3 – 2 win.

The semi-final of the Girls’ U.19 Shield was contested on the 7th May by Rockwell and Laurel Hill Colaiste.  Rockwell team:  Jill Pierse and Lean McMorrow (singles), Aine O’Dwyer and Louise Quinlan.   The girls, having won all their matches, have qualified for the Finals in Limerick on 13th May.

The semi-final of the Boys’ U.19 Shield was contested between Rockwell and CBC on Friday 8th May.  Rockwell team:  Alex McAlpin and Liam Marshall, Barry McEvoy and Tim Rafferty.  The Rockwell team was defeated by 3 matches to 0.

March-April 2009

The Boys’ Under 19 team played the Preliminary Round against St. Flannan’s Ennis in Cashel on Monday 30th March.  The team of Alex McAlpin and Liam Marshall (singles) and Max Puckalitzsch and Barry McEvoy (doubles) was defeated as a result of which they were entered in the Shield Competition.  Here they played John the Baptist School, Hospital.  Tim Rafferty substituted for Max, and he and Barry won their doubles match.  Alex and Liam also won their singles games.  The team has reached the semi-final stage of their competition where they will play the winners of Cistercian College Roscrea and CBC Cork.

On the same day, the 21st April, the Under 16A team was defeated by John the Baptist in each of their three games.  Denis O’Connell substituted for Ugo Tanielien who had not returned from holidays.  Denis and Piers Benson played doubles; Mark O’Connell and Richard Kennedy played singles.

The Girls’ Under 19 team defeated Ursuline Thurles 3 – 0 on Tuesday 31st March.  Played in Thurles, the Rockwell team was Jill Pierse and Lean McMorrow (singles) and Louise Quinlan and Aine O’Dwyer (doubles).  The girls’ next match will be against Laurel Hill Coláiste.

The Boys’ Under 16B team defeated Glenstal in the Munster Shield Cashel on Friday 24th April.  The team will now play John the Baptist, Hospital, in the semi-final.   Jack Marshall won his singles match and Cesar Naeve and Charles Pierse won their doubles but Aidan Butler lost his singles.  In the reverse doubles, Aidan and Cesar were defeated so it all came down to the Jack Marshall and Charles Pierse doubles.  Eventually the Rockwell pair won through by two sets to one.

The Under 16A Boys’ team played Abbey School Waterford in Cashel on Friday 20th March in the Preliminary Round.  Team was:  Ugo Tanielian, Richard Kennedy, Mark O’Connell and Piers Benson.  Ugo won his singles and, in partnership with Piers, won his reverse doubles.  Mark and Piers (Doubles) and Mark (singles) lost.  Overall the team was defeated 2 – 3

CBS Tramore, drawn to play Rockwell in the Boys’ Under 19 Competition have withdrawn from the competition.   Rockwell will now play St. Flannan’s Ennis on Monday 30th March in the Preliminary Round

The Girls’ U.19 team will play Ursuline Thurles in Thurles in the Shield on Tuesday 31st March.

 

The Preliminary Round of the U.14 Boys Tennis took place in Cork on Friday, 5th March.  PBC defeated Rockwell by 3 matches to 0.  Results:  Singles - Denis OConnell defeated by 6-4, 6-4; Niall Murphy defeated by 6-2,6-1; Cian Farrell and Liam Casey defeated in doubles by 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.  Rockwell is now entered in the Shield Competition.

The Under 16B team travelled to Tramore on Monday, 9th March where they were outclassed by the local CBS team which included the Munster No.2 and No.5 players.  The team of Jack Marshall, Aidan Butler, Cesar Naeve and Charles Pierse was defeated by 3 matches to 0.  Rockwell is now entered in the Shield Competition.

The Under 19 Girls team of Jill Pierse, Lean McMorrow, Laura Tobin, and Aine ODwyer played St. Anne’s Tipperary in Tipperary Town in the Preliminary Round of the Munster U.16 Competition on Thursday 12th March.  The result was 3-2 in favour of St. Anne’s.  Jill and Lean won their singles matches.  All three doubles were lost.
